Chinese-Style Beef with Caramelized Onions

This simple yet flavorful dish showcases tender beef slices topped with sweet caramelized onions—a classic Chinese delicacy.

Ingredients😋

For the beef:

1 lb (450 g) beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain

1 tbsp soy sauce

1 tsp oyster sauce

1/2 tsp sugar

1/2 tsp cornstarch

1 tsp sesame oil

For the caramelized onions:

2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced into rings

1 tbsp cooking oil

1 tsp sugar

For stir-frying:

2 tbsp cooking oil

1 tbsp soy sauce

1/2 tbsp dark soy sauce (optional, for color)

1/4 cup water or beef stock

Instructions😋

1. Marinate the beef:

Combine soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, cornstarch, and sesame oil.

Add beef slices, mix well, and marinate for 15–20 minutes.

2. Caramelize the onions:

Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan over medium-low heat.

Add sliced onions and sugar. Sauté slowly until golden brown and soft (about 10–15 minutes).

Remove and set aside.

3. Stir-fry the beef:

Heat 2 tbsp oil in a wok or large pan over high heat.

Add the marinated beef in a single layer and sear until browned (2–3 minutes).

Remove beef and set aside.

4. Combine:

In the same pan, return the caramelized onions. Add soy sauce, dark soy sauce, and water/stock.

Toss the beef back into the pan. Stir-fry together for 1–2 minutes until coated and heated through.

5. Serve:

Transfer to a platter, arranging the beef slices neatly with the caramelized onions on top. Serve immediately with steamed rice or noodles.

Tips for Success

Beef: Freezing the beef for 15 minutes before slicing makes it easier to achieve thin slices.

Caramelizing onions: Don’t rush this step—it’s essential for the dish’s sweet and rich flavor.

Sauce adjustment: Add extra oyster sauce or soy sauce to balance flavors as needed.

Enjoy this authentic and satisfying Chinese delicacy!
