Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease cake pans.
Mix flour, baking soda, baking powder, cocoa powder, and salt.
Beat butter and sugar until fluffy.
Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla and food coloring if using.
Alternate dry ingredients with buttermilk while mixing.
Stir vinegar into batter.
Divide batter into pans and bake 25–30 minutes.
Cool completely before frosting.

Beat butter and cream cheese until smooth.
Add powdered sugar and vanilla gradually.
Adjust texture with milk if needed.
