4 large onions (thinly sliced)
3 tbsp butter
1 tbsp olive oil
2 cloves garlic (minced)
1 tbsp flour
1.2 liters beef broth
½ cup dry white wine (optional)
1 tsp thyme
1 bay leaf
½ tsp black pepper
Salt to taste
4 slices baguette
1 ½ cups Gruyère or mozzarella cheese (shredded)
